Joseph B. Wirthlin (October 2007 Conference)

Yes, those who go home teaching out of duty, for example, may fulfill their obligation. But those who home teach out of genuine love for the Lord and for their fellowman will likely approach that task with a very different attitude.

I decided that it was best to go really specific and practical today because I think that I spend too much of my time thinking about and not practicing principles. This one is to remind me that followers of Christ are not great administrators, but great ministers. Last night I went to a meeting that was really long (2 and 1/2 hours!) and all about administration and I was pretty upset because I could have done some actual Christ-like service during that time instead of just talking about it. Not to say that I would have done some service. Fact is, I probably would have spent that time doing something just as wasteful. Anyway, knowing that about myself I decided to memorize something really specific and practical that will hopefully get me moving in the right direction.

By the way, when Elder Wirthlin said this in conference, he was shaking out of fatigue from standing and it was pretty incredible that he even stayed up there to finish his talk. Elder Nelson stood up and steadied him for about 3/4ths of his talk because he was having some real difficulties. It was a pretty memorable conference moment.
